“Did Sikandar Really Win… or Just Survive?

The story of Porus and Alexander the Great has fascinated people for generations. For many of us, especially those who grew up watching historical dramas or hearing cultural stories, the narrative feels very different from what textbooks tell us. Most conventional history—largely based on Greek sources—states that Alexander defeated Porus in the Battle of the Hydaspes (326 BCE). According to these accounts, Porus was captured but later reinstated as a king because Alexander was impressed by his courage and leadership. But is that the only way to interpret what happened? In popular retellings, including shows like Porus, Porus is portrayed not as a defeated king, but as a symbol of strength, dignity, and values. He is shown as someone who stood firm against a powerful invader and fought with honor. In contrast, Sikandar is often depicted as a brilliant but relentless strategist—someone who would do whatever it took to achieve victory. This contrast has led many people to question the traditional narrative. Some argue that Porus may not have truly “lost” in the way history describes. Instead, they believe he was outmaneuvered by strategy, diplomacy, or even narrative control. After all, most surviving records come from the side of Alexander. And as the saying goes, history is often written by those who claim victory. Another important aspect often highlighted in cultural stories is the role of values. In dramatized versions, Porus is sometimes shown extending mercy or acting according to dharma—principles of righteousness and honor. Whether or not these specific events happened exactly as shown, they reflect a broader idea deeply rooted in Indian thought: that character matters as much as conquest. This brings us to a deeper question that goes beyond history: What does it really mean to win? Is victory defined purely by who controls the battlefield at the end? Or can it also be measured by integrity, leadership, and the respect one commands—even from an opponent? Interestingly, even in historical accounts, Alexander did not destroy Porus or his kingdom. Instead, he allowed him to continue ruling and even expanded his territory. This suggests that, at the very least, Porus was not seen as a typical defeated enemy. So perhaps the outcome wasn’t as simple as “one won and the other lost.” It may have been a complex encounter where: * One side achieved a military advantage * The other retained honor, influence, and long-term authority And maybe that’s why this story continues to resonate. Because in today’s world—whether in business, leadership, or personal decisions—we face similar dilemmas. Should we prioritize winning at any cost, or staying true to our principles? Is short-term victory more important than long-term respect? The story of Porus and Sikandar doesn’t give us a single clear answer. Instead, it invites us to think, question, and interpret. And that may be its greatest value. Because sometimes, the most powerful stories are not the ones that tell us what to believe—but the ones that make us ask better questions.
